Swinging the axe again

More bad news...

Correspondence received today from the company informs us that layoffs are indeed planned for LANG, effective tomorrow.

According to an email sent by Guild rep Vicki Di Paolo, ten employees have been targeted, eight bargaining unit members and two managers.

I'm sorry to report that we received correspondence from the company today, notifying us that there will be additional layoffs tomorrow, Thursday January 8, in the editorial departments at both the Daily News and the Press Telegram. At the Daily News a total of seven positions will be cut, five from the bargaining unit and two managers. At the Press Telegram three positions will be eliminated, all from the bargaining unit.

The decision is reportedly in response to declining revenues.

The Guild has requested a meeting with the company to discuss the impact and effects of these layoffs, and for information regarding their decision, and how the remaining staff will handle the workload. Although the layoffs appear to meet the company's contractual obligations, we will determine if any violations have occurred, and if so we will file a grievance immediately.

To assure that no contractual violations have occurred, I ask those of you who receive notice to please contact me via email or my cell at 562-260-8378.

Like most of you, we received the news with a mixture of sadness and anger. How can continued attacks on the beleaguered staff possibly have any positive effect on the company's future?

Our heart goes out to everyone affected by these layoffs, and we want to offer our sincere condolences, and an assurance that we will continue to fight for our remaining members.

To upper management and you know who you are, If you have any dignity left at all, if you are at or past retirement age, try going out a hero and save a job or two by falling on the sword for you soldiers.

can sports columnist really get away with writing about non-sport items.....say umm bar buddies and trips to Europe?
Then recycle their columns ... just change the date and hit send button.
And get paid all that money to do it and when the big cuts come the columnists don't even write about the layoffs and how the paper is going down the drain... Oh thats right they have a lunch to attend at Smooths.

Sad when all you can write is "I remember when" columns.

So managers dodge the axe again?! Big surprise. I hope they plan on doing all the work themselves 'cuz that's where it's headed.

this is heartbreaking.
once again, stupid decisions.
but why no managers? makes no sense. somebody should really investigate. it's ironic given the fact that the managers make so much more than rank and file. 3 for the price of 1.

Managers are doing work as we speak!! I.E. CB ( good guy bad situation ) does a crap load work on the web and some page design, that was work once done by laid off web guy and designers. And lets not forget the byline " Staff Reports " AKA done by a city desk editor or sports editor.

We must enforce that.

If god, buddah, allah, jehova, krishna, joesph smith, xenu or any diety I failed to mention can read this: Please, for all that is good and decent let Krikorian be one of those let go. He's worthless and his salary alone can save the jobs of people who do the real work at the paper.

i just wish they would complete the layoffs in one big swoop. It would ease everyone's fears.

There have been grievances filed for every instance of management doing bargaining unit work that we're aware of. If there's an instance you know of that we haven't responded to yet, please contact us to share your information.

This sort of thing is always one of our biggest concerns after company layoffs, we need your help in order to enforce the contract. Again, please pass along anything you see, and details are important, so taking notes is a big help.
